Vet for a Day
Tuesday, July 7 from
1-3 pm
This extremely popular program is back again! For kids who love animals
and dream about becoming a vet someday, this is a great introduction to
learning about a career working with animals. Local veterinarian Dr.
Bart Forlano and the wonderful dogs from Tundra Spirits Husky Rescue,
team up to show children just what a vet does everyday in this
interactive class. Kids will see a typical dog exam, help Dr. Bart
diagnose x-rays from real cases, learn about the needs and differences
in various species and get a chance to ask lots of questions. Concludes
with a tour of the shelter.
The class size is limited and there is
always a waiting list, so register early to be guaranteed a spot. For
kids in grades 3 and up.
Cost:

Batty About Birds
Friday,
July 17 from 1-3 pm
Join our own Dr. April Davis, who is an expert on birds and bats! Dr.
Davis will introduce you to several of her own fascinating birds and
also bring in a native New York bat for everyone to see and learn about.
Class includes bird craft project,
goodie bag and a tour of the shelter. For kids in grades 2 and up.

NEW!
CATS!
Wednesday,
July 22 from 1-3 pm
Do you love kitties as much as we do? Then this is the class for you!
Come learn all about those fascinating felines. Meet special guest
"Rudy", a very unique cat from the APF that you are not soon going to
forget.
Class includes cat craft project,
goodie bag and a tour of the shelter. For kids in grades 2 and up.

Community Service Workshop for Middle & High School Students
Come by the APF on Wednesday, July 1st at 2 pm for an informational session for those of you who
want to get some community service hours in for school credit or just
have an interest in helping homeless animals. We receive many calls from
students interested in volunteering at the shelter and though you can't
work on-site or directly with the animals, you will learn of the many
different opportunities there are to help animals and earn community
service hours at the same time.
All attendees are
asked to bring donations of dog and/or cat food for the Pet Food Pantry
Program!

On-site Programs
Year Round
Sharing Sam – Designed for preschool and
kindergarten age children, this fun program features a short story
and an interactive visual presentation to introduce young children
to the concept of caring for animals. Concludes with a tour of the
shelter.
BARK – This stands for Be Aware,
Responsible and Kind. The program includes a video and focuses on how to safely interact with animals, getting clues from their body language. It’s an important lesson in safety that all children should experience.
Includes lesson, shelter tour and a fun animal related craft
project.
Pet Care – Focuses on what type of care dogs,
cats and other small animals need from their owners in order to be
happy and healthy. This interactive program is great for kids with pets and those getting ready to adopt.
Many Girl Scout troops working on their Pet Care badge choose this
program. Includes lesson, shelter tour and a fun animal related
craft project.
Throwaways – For middle and high-school age
students, includes a video about the epidemic of pet overpopulation
in the U.S. today and a tour of the APF facilities. Culminates in a
discussion and brain-storming session about what teens can actively
do to help homeless pets. Participants will leave with a variety of
helpful informational materials. Great for groups looking to do
community service projects.

about 1.5 hours and may be scheduled afternoons on Tuesdays through Fridays. Donations of $3 per child
to cover program materials,
along with suggested items from our

Adopt-a-Classroom Program
Educating children about humane issues is one of the most important and far-reaching ways we can help animals. The Adopt-a-Classroom program is one way we help teachers deliver humane lessons to their students. Through this program, we provide free subscriptions of the award-winning newspaper KIND News to elementary classrooms. Its emphasis on humane values, such as fairness, compassion, and responsibility seeks to encourage good character in children.
